How to Change the Default Browser and Mail Apps on iPhone

While Safari is a convenient browser and Mail a solid choice for your mobile device, you may prefer something different. For opening links on your iPhone and iPad, you can change from Safari to use Chrome, Firefox, or another option by default. As for email, you can choose Gmail, Outlook, or your other preferred provider.

Here’s how to change the default web browser and email app on iPhone and iPad.

Change the Default Web Browser on iPhone

Before you begin, make sure that you have the web browser you want to use installed on your iPhone or iPad. Then, follow these steps to make it the default.

  1. Open the Settings and choose the browser you want to use.
  2. Select Default Browser App and pick the web browser which places a checkmark next to it.
  3. Tap the back arrow on the top to exit and you’ll see the browser name next to Default Browser App.

Change the Default Mail App on iPhone

Like with setting your default web browser on iPhone or iPad, be sure you have the email app installed. Then, follow these steps to make it the default.

  1. Open the Settings and choose the email app you want to use.
  2. Select Default Mail App and pick the app name which places a checkmark next to it.
  3. Tap the back arrow on the top to exit and you’ll see the email app name next to Default Mail App.

Return to Safari and Mail as the Defaults

If you decide later to return to Safari and Mail as the defaults on your mobile device, you have two simple ways to do so.

  • Method 1: Follow the steps above to open the Settings and choose your current default app. Then, select Default Browser App and pick Safari or Default Mail App and pick Mail.

  • Method 2: Delete the web browser or email app you set as the default and your device automatically reverts to Safari or Mail by default.

By setting your default web browser and email apps on iPhone and iPad, you can rest assured that all links you open for websites or emails use your preferred services.
